Fun for the Holidays

November 21, 2012

The Reflection Pool has been drained. The lights have gone up on Newbury. They placed that huge, gold Christmas ornament outside the Prudential Building. It can all only mean one thing: the Holidays are here!

Now we know this post is a wee bit late, but we were caught up in our Alpha launch and making it the best thing ever (so you should check out our site where it’s not just deals anymore, but deals with friends: hoponbandwagon.com)

But it’s better late than ever, right?

The Holidays are coming and that can only mean one thing—Boston is getting into the spirit! It’s a lot to keep track of, we are a metro of nearly five million people after all, so we at Bandwagon decided to make a list of the Holiday events that this grand old city has to offer, all for the price of free or cheap. Now who could pass up a list like that?

1.       The Boston Tree Lighting and pre-lighting Ice Skating Spectacular

The Boston Common Christmas tree has been on quite a journey. Starting from the wilds of Nova Scotia and journeying across unpredictable highways of America, it had arrived last week on Friday to the Common. It has a bit of a break before the Boston Common Tree lighting, but not much of one: the Lighting is November 29th.

The ceremony begins at 5:30pm with a Pre-lighting Ice Skating Spectacular on the Frog Pond, which features local ice skating stars and is guaranteed to be a lot of fun. Then, make sure to head over to the Tree Lighting early to guarantee a good seat and have ample time to check out all the free samples. Wear warm clothing because nights can get pretty chilly. And, above all, keep your eyes peeled for Santa Claus.

The Tree lighting event begins around seven featuring American Idol finalist, Elliott Yamin, and “The Voice” contestant James Massone. The entire event closes with a pyrotechnic display by Pyrospectaculars, Inc.

This is the biggest (and free) holiday event of Boston, so make sure not to miss it!

2.       Boston Blinks! A Light and Sound Extravaganza

This is a new event this season. It kicked off last week with a gorgeous launch on Saturday, November 17th. It continues for six weeks until December 30th, with live performances every half hour from 4:30pm – 10:00pm. Such performers include the Holiday Pops and local talent.

Boston Blinks! is an entirely free and outdoors event at Faneuil Hall.

They’re also running other deals beside it at the restaurants in Quincy Market, so grab a bite to eat as you watch the Boston skyline light up this holiday season.

3.       Macy’s Enchanted Trolley Tour

It’s that time of year again when Boston will be shouting “the red coat is coming! The red coat is coming!” But this time it will be in reference to the Big Man in a red suit, Santa Claus, and not our country’s tyrannical progenitor coming by sea.

The Macy’s Trolly Tour makes the magic of the holidays mobile and spreads cheer to 15 Boston neighborhoods.  They are generally the first weekend of December. We’ll keep you posted on when they put up their 2012 schedule, but it’s definitely a must-see of the holiday season.

4.       The Nutcracker

It’s the classic of classics and the quintessential play of the Holiday season: The Nutcracker. Let Tchaikovsky’s score and Clara’s dream world bring the holidays to life.

This play is being run at multiple theaters all around Boston and in the surrounding metro.

Below we have a list of shows whose shows have deals (i.e. half price tickets)

The Nutcracker by the Hanover Theater

The Nutcracker by the Jose Mateo Theater

The Nutcracker, orchestra level seating

5.       Downtown Boston Holiday Market

Downtown Crossing has made shopping for those Christmas presents a little more fun. For the month of December, the area gets dressed up for the holidays and independent vendors line the street. You can buy handmade gifts, handcrafted food, home décor, ceramics and pottery, herbal products, mixed media and much more!

If you can’t find everything you’re shopping for, Santa Claus is also at the market, so you can try to squeeze your item onto his list.
